Rating: - * Worst firmware EVER ... Okay...let's see... -Often, when attempting to record to the HDD, the device comes up with the vague and unsettling message "Unexpected error." Only way to clear it is to unplug the unit, plug it back in, and wait the 2-3 minutes while it comes up, by which time, your window for starting to record is closed. -No ability to manually set a timer to start recording at a specific time and end at a specific time. -No ability to start recording and have the recording stop in 30/60/90/120/180/240 minutes. -Every 3 hours, need to deal with the annoying "Do you want to continue watching TV? If so, press ENTER." dialog. -Editing a title recorded to HDD (to strip off leader and trailer) is needlessly complicated. In short- this thing makes me want to throw my remote through my television. Run, don't walk, away from this DVR. Rating: - * useful ... real short this isn't a High Definition recorder. the TV guide is compatible with Cable TV. very difficult to use. I paid over $500, I wouldn't reccomend it, given the price. Rating: - * input at 480i only ... if you're looking for a DVR to record 1080i or anything above 480i, this ain't it does a nice job of upconverting from 480i, whether from dvds or other inputs, but upconverting is all you get, it will not pass through, and will not record and play, a 1080i input signal Rating: - * Solid Choice ... The only real problem I have had with this unit is that it requires the TV Guide channel for its programming info, and a week after I got it, my cable company announced that they were cutting the TV guide channel on everything but digital cable. If I upgrade to digital cable, I get a DVR from them for an extra $5 a month, so my unit may soon be obsolete. So that may be something to check into. That being said, I really enjoy this DVR. It has changed the way that I watch TV. I don't think that I have actually watched a commercial since I bought it. Very nice. I find the controls to be intuitive, but I'm a bit of a techie. My wife can't really figure them out, so I guess it is not easy for everyone. People have said that it is noisy, but I don't notice it at all. The DVD recorder is another nice feature, I use it more than I thought I would. The only thing that I don't like is that navigating the TV Guide listings sometimes lags quite a bit and can be slow and tedious. However, all the different seach options speed it up quite a bit and are great. Overall, it is a very fun toy. I give it two thumbs up! Rating: - * Network Navigation ... Purchased my unit at the end of November, and recv'd in good order from Amazon. Everything seems to be working fine (I haven't tried working w/the DVD-Ram yet, or burning to disc), with one exception. I have encountered a problem w/Network Navigation. It won't work with Internet Explorer 7. I phoned Customer Service and was told that an update to resolve this issue wasn't even in works. Perhaps they are waiting for Vista, but as this seems to be the Toshiba HDD-DVD flagship, and IE7 has been out for a while now, I feel like this should have been addressed before now. The Unit itself would have recv'd 4 stars (it is fairly complicated), but this issue drops my rating, as this was one of the features I was looking forward to using. So before you spend a day crawling around in your attic to run a network cable (like I did), check your browser. |

The prize must have come, at least in part, because alongside the poverty and dispossession, Steinbeck chronicled the Joads' refusal, even inability, to let go of their faltering but unmistakable hold on human dignity. Witnessing their degeneration from Oklahoma farmers to a diminished band of migrant workers is nothing short of crushing. The Joads lose family members to death and cowardice as they go, and are challenged by everything from weather to the authorities to the California locals themselves. As Tom Joad puts it: "They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop. They're workin' on our decency."
The point, though, is that decency remains intact, if somewhat battle-scarred, and this, as much as the depression and the plight of the "Okies," is a part of American history. When the California of their dreams proves to be less than edenic, Ma tells Tom: "You got to have patience. Why, Tom--us people will go on livin' when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we're the people that live. They ain't gonna wipe us out. Why, we're the people--we go on." It's almost as if she's talking about the very novel she inhabits, for Steinbeck's characters, more than most literary creations, do go on. They continue, now as much as ever, to illuminate and humanize an era for generations of readers who, thankfully, have no experiential point of reference for understanding the depression. The book's final, haunting image of Rose of Sharon--Rosasharn, as they call her--the eldest Joad daughter, forcing the milk intended for her stillborn baby onto a starving stranger, is a lesson on the grandest scale. "'You got to,'" she says, simply. And so do we all. --Melanie Rehak
