Editorial Review:

Item Description:
One of the problems with home-theater surround sound is finding the space to place 6 speakers in a room. It can be a challenge. Sony's HT-CT100 converts the surround experience to 3.1 channels and uses only 2 speakers, a subwoofer and a SoundBar. The SoundBar is placed like a center channel speaker directly over the TV. Speakers within the bar radiate at different angles to deliver center, left, and right channels through a spatially enhanced soundfield. With 50 Watts to each channel + 100 Watts directly to subwoofer, the system delivers 250 watts total. Featuring HDMI - Component Video - Optical A/V ports, you can connect your TV and DVD or Blu-Ray player directly to the system. It's the simplest, most streamlined way to enjoy home-theater surround.

LPCM Playback - LPCM is a method of encoding audio information digitally which can have up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio. This wider bandwidth allows for high resolution audio which is closer to the original 3 Optical, 1-Coax Dolby Digital/DTS/ProLogic

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great Sound, Just Not Close to 5.1 Surround Sound ...
I love these speakers!!! It is a full & rich sound that is way better than the TV speakers. I have pets that would chew wires and can not put them in the walls or under a rug. As such, the sound bar solution was really my only choice (except for an all wireless system). Since I bought a Sony HD TV, I was biased to stay in the Sony family since the Bravia sync kept usage simple (a requirement for low-tech wife & kids). When I played movies that have great surround scenes (e.g., train whizzing by in Hot Fuzz - great movie by the way), the sound was great but not like I have heard with a true 5.1 system where you hear the train coming from behind you). For the price & constraints I have, this is a great solution.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * Sound not good...Not good for bigger rooms !! ...
I brought it and connected all via HDMIs. Easy setup. However the sound coming from the soundbar/subwoofer is average at best. I have a bigger room and the sound from this system is same as my 56" Samsung DLP TV.
I also tried connecting sound via optical cable and got the same results. I think this system (as it mentions) is for people with small rooms and set up convenience without having to run wires around.
I plan to return and try Yamaha YAS-70 sound bar system and from what I have read, seen and heard that system seems much better (ofcourse little pricey too).

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * Buy this only if you are looking for tech convenience not for sound ...
I was on lookout for a decent soundbar and not on a big budget. The sony HTCT100 seemed to fit well within my budget. But I was very disappointed on the sound front.

Pros
Looks good
Lots of inputs
HDMI switching capability
Works well with Bravia.

Cons
Not enough /good sound.

Bottomline if you are looking for better sound you will be disappointed.
I did not think it did much better than my TV speakers(yes although I will admit it added a little more base notes).

But I was not willing to spend 300 for that. So I returned this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great sound! ...
I am very pleased with this product. Not only does it look sleek and unobtrusive, but it sounds great!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * Good (not great) Sound, Connectivity Issues ...
I've got an older plasma TV with a single DVI (think HDMI without sound...) input. The HDMI switching and being able to stop using the built-in speakers seemed like just the ticket. It turns out that the unit will not use sound from HDMI input from either my Comcast DVR or my upscaling DVD player when I use an HDMI to DVI cable. As a result I'm running audio to the TV then back to the HT-CT100 and have lost the advantage of have HDMI switching. BEWARE if you've got a DVI input to your TV.

The surround-sound effect is fairly limited. Mucking around with the field effects and the center sound level is necessary to get a reasonable approximation of surround-sound. Bass, mid-range and treble reproduction is very good. The volume is adequate but certainly not huge.

For my situation, the unit is just barely a keeper. For someone with HDMI inputs to the TV, it's a pretty good value.
