If you are on the phone for hours a day, the benefits of a headset over a handset become clear--especially if it is as light and comfortable as the Plantronics T10 model. This phone uses a corded headset, which decreases mobility somewhat, but it is unusual in that it comes with every accessory you'll need to use the headset in an over-the-head or over-the-ear configuration.

Installing this phone is child's play. A standard telephone cord (included) connects the small base unit to a wall jack, and the headset cord connects to the front of the unit. No power cord is necessary. Plantronics used a standard telephone jack interface for the headset but wisely used light headphone cable instead of bulky telephone cord on the unit. This helps keep the headset's already low weight to a minimum. They've also thoughtfully included a small alligator clip on the headset cord so you can clip it to a shirt pocket and keep the cord from brushing your face as you move.

As mentioned, the headset microphone and speaker unit can be attached to an ear hook or a headband. The headband is very light and highly adjustable, but we preferred using the ear hooks. Plantronics packages three different sizes of hooks with the device, so there's bound to be one that fits. The hooks sit on your ear instead of using a clamping mechanism, and the entire assembly is so light and unobtrusive that we were able to forget it was there after a few minutes. The microphone is the type that extends to your cheek instead of in front of your lips, so you don't have to deal with it bumping against your lips when you talk. For all these reasons, we were able to wear the headset all day without it getting in the way or making us look like extras from a bad sci-fi movie.

As for the sound quality, it was great under most circumstances. The microphone is so sensitive that it can pick up the hum of a computer if it's pointed in that direction, so this may not be the best solution for noisy environments. For typical office use, the T10 is great as long as you don't need a lot of advanced features on the base, such as two-line input or caller ID. --T. Byrl Baker

Rating: - * I love this phone/headset ... I, too, read the reviews on this T10 model and am so glad I took the chance. I'd tried other corded models but this one fit the bill for me. I can use it while walking around the house (I bought an extension that allows me to go to any room in the house), while sitting at the desk surrounded with all of the electronic equipment (no static noise!), or in the kitchen. I work as a telephonic interpreter and must use a corded phone, so this works ideally for me. Especially like the push button on the phone itself for mute rather than it being on the cord. Other headsets have the mute on the cord, and they snap easily. This unit is small enough that I can fit it into an apron pocket and be handsfree while I walk around the house with it. Way cool! Rating: - * LOUD BUZZ/SCREECH ... Read the reviews before I purchased. Found many folks that bought and unit had a loud buzz. I ignored these and bought anyway. Guess what?? My unit had the buzz and believe me the buzz is loud and is more like a screech. It's so loud you have to hold the headset away from your ear. Nothing corrects it. I called Plantronics and they said it was a bad unit. I will not purchase another because I think the odds are I'll get the same thing. Good Luck. Hooray to Amazon. They took it back no questions and paid the return postage. Rating: - * Superb Product, Exactly as Described ... I needed a comfortable headset since I work from home as a Customer Service Rep. This Plantronics headset is very light, has excellent features; seperate mute, on/off, volume and tone control buttons, plus a phone unit built in. It is simple to set up, and I use it for 5 hours a day without even realizing I have it on. It was exactly as described, and I got it for $10 less online than anywhere else. It's definitely top of line, you can't go wrong with this one. Rating: - * Good for what it is. ... The headset with volume and tone control is excellent. There are features I wanted, but this was the only headset phone that wasn't cordless that was reasonably priced. There is no memory for numbers and you can't turn off the ringer. This phone is as perfect as anything can be in this world-- at least for my avowed purpose. I set out to buy a phone to meet the requirements of the work-at-home employer I was seeking to join up with: corded, headset, noise reduction microphone. It passes the muster with flying colors.
