Editorial Review:

Item Description:
The 2big 1TB Gigabit Network Drive can act as a file-sharing server, a backup server or an FTP server. Easily share important files and make them accessible from anywhere via FTP or any web browser. With this 2-disk RAID solution with Ethernet interface, get maximum storage capacity in BIG mode or maximum security in SAFE mode (RAID 1). If one drive fails in RAID 1, data remains accessible and can even be automatically rebuilt onto a hot-swappable spare drive. With the 2 USB ports, easily transfer files from a USB key or USB hard drive with the 1-Click Data-Sharing Button or expand available network capacity. The new heat sink metal design naturally draws heat away from the hard disk's internal components to help keep it cool and improve reliability. The user-friendly LaCie Ethernet Agent enables direct access to shares, drive mapping, and easy administrator configuration. 400MHz Processor, DDR2 RAM Network Setting - New web-based management, Auto IP configuration (DHCP client compatible) Network Protocols - SMB (Windows/Linux); AFP (Mac); FTP; HTTP; Apple Bonjour RAID Modes - SAFE 100 (RAID 1) - maximum security BIG (concatenation) - maximum capacity Software - LaCie Ethernet Agent for accessing, mapping & configuring drives on the network LaCie 1-Click Backup Software Cooling System - Heat sink metal design for natural cooling; thermo-regulated, linear smart fan System Requirements - Ethernet switch or router, Intel Pentium 500MHz processor, G4 with Mac Intel 500MHz processor or greater, 512MB RAM or higher, web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox), Windows 98SE, Window ME, Window 2000, Window XP, Window Vista, Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Linux 2.4 or higher Dimensions - Width 3.5 x Height 7.8 x Depth 6.7 (91x200x172mm) Weight - 5.8 pounds (2630 grams)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Safe at last! ...
I have two of these drives on my network, I liked the first one so much I went ahead and got a second one to give me a combined 1GB RAID 1 network storage. Used in the RAID 1 mode, the data is automatically written to both discs so if one ever crashes (or when) the data is duplicated with no backups needed.

After about the third total wipe-out of all my data and subsequent restoration woes resulting in less than complete data restoration I decided to go to the network RAID 1 drives. A side benefit is that the data is available on all computers on my home network, not an out of date copy, the same data files, no more mixed up versions.

No real complaints on this product, both the units I have do the job and have not given me any trouble so far. Can't ask more than that.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * Works as advertised ...
I am using this for backup and serving media files on my home network. Since I need Internet access to the files, I was thinking of getting one of the HP MediaSmart Servers using Windows Home Server. However, after reading mixed reviews of Windows Home Server, and since I already have a small PC with Win2K acting as a home server, I decided to add network attached storage instead. I can manage Internet access through the existing server.

So far, the drive is working fine. It is built like a tank, and runs very cool and quiet. I am using it in the RAID 1 (mirrored) mode. It appears as a network share under Windows, or you can access it by its IP address. You can also mount it as a remote drive. My PCs are generally set up with 3 partitions; C: for system, D: for applications and E: for user files. For backup, I use Acronis True Image to make images of the C: partitions and SyncBack to backup the files on the other partitions.

The reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are:
- it supports FTP and HTTP access, so you could access it directly from the Internet through your router, but these are insecure protocols and exposing them directly to the Internet would not be a good idea. It would be nice if it supported HTTPS and FTPS, or SSH.
- according to one of the websites that benchmark these things, it is fairly slow, about half the speed of the fastest comparable product. You would only see the difference on a 1GB network, and it doesn't really matter to me since I am mainly using it for backup. If you need maximum bandwidth (for multiple streams of video, for example) you should probably check the specs and be sure it is fast enough. LaCie claims that they are working on a software update that will improve the speed.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - * Major Security Flaw ...
Pros: Good network hard drive if you are looking for something that mirrors automatically.

Cons:
It is possible to bypass all security permissions on this LaCie 2Big Network hard drive via FTP. The default `admin' password will not change on the FTP side of the user login even after changing the admin login password. This allows full access to the hard drive via the administrators login to the FTP.

I have contacted LaCie regarding this issue only to be told that this is a 'feature' of the product not a defect.

Steps to verify.

1. Setup a LaCie 2Big Network Hard drive with FTP access as per the manufacture instructions.
2. Change the `Admin' password anything you like.
3. Using an FTP client, log in to the LaCie 2Big Network hard drive using the 'admin' log in and your password.
4. You will not be able to log in using the new password
5. Using an FTP client, log in to the LaCie 2Big Network hard drive using the `admin' log in the default `admin' password.
6. You have full access to all folders and documents in the hard drive.

Do NOT buy this product if you are planning on using it for an FTP.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
