Rating: - * Basically Good ... I received a Go Video DVD-R as a present and find it very easy to use- and considering who it is from probably reasonably priced. I use it primarily for dvd viewing and for recording shows. Set up was simple and they do give you a toll free number to call and will talk you through your first recording (and include a blank dvd) but I found I didnt need it. Menus are user friendly and self-explanatory. I found it easy to set up my own chapters on recorded discs (provided they are dvd-rw) and add titles. You can easily hide sections of the tape (like commercials). Cons are that it is very picky about the discs it will record on- some brands just wont work and other brands if you use the timed recording (and the machine automatically shuts off) then the recording is gone. I just simply buy Maxwell DVDR+ since those are constantly on sale at Best Buy. I've used recorded movies in other dvd players and they've worked in all players and computers except one player- but I'm not sure if that was a fault with the disc or not. Also, sometimes the picture coming from the tv will be slightly off- as if it is missing every 5th frame- you can't watch television off it directly all the time but it always records fine. I have no idea how it works on recordings off of camcorders. I would suggest this dvd-r does a good job at a reasonable price. However, if you are looking for preserving memories you probably want to buy a higher quality. Update: its been 18 months of use on this dvd player with a high level of use and recording (I would record shows for people in remote areas and overseas). Last week its starting to hum rather loudly while the power is on. I think I may have to replace it in the next couple of months. Rating: - * Do not buy!!! ... I purchased this recorder and was pleased with it until it froze while I was recording. The only way to unfreeze it was to unplug the unit. When you do this, you lose everything you previously recorded. I returned the unit and got a replacement (refurbished unit I found out later). After a week, the same thing happened again. I returned and received 2 more units. The last unit I asked for a brand new one, but who knows if it really was. Even this one did the same thing. I can't tell you how much material I have permanently lost because of this recorder. Stay away from this unit and anything else GoVideo puts out there or you'll be sorry. One more thing if you do buy this unit, make sure you return it within 30 days of purchasing when you have problems, and you will have them. If after 30 days, GoVideo will make you pay $79 for a replacement and it's a refurbished machine. Rating: - * GO VIDEO - WORST COMPANY I'VE EVER DEALT WITH ... I bought a unit from GO Video and experienced horrors with their customer service as mentioned in other reviews. My unit came without any of the accessories and after 6 weeks of talking to more than a half dozen people (with more runaround than you can even begin to imagine) at go video, I still have a unit that will not work. avoid this manufacturer!! Rating: - * what a piece of .... ... First of all, I have the GoVideo Dual Deck VCR player which I got about 5 years ago and that works excelently, so when it came time to upgrade my DVD player, I thought... "why not GoVideo"? I"ll tell you why not... Their DVD player/recorder is a piece of CRAP. Let's start with that. I wanted a DVD player that could also record. While this one did just that, it seemed to have a mind of it's own. I'd only owned the damned thing for 2 months when it started acting up. e.g. When you insert a DVD disc, what do you expect? For the TV screen to show the DVD main menu, right? And when it is on the main menu, and the "PLAY" option is highlighted, meaning, if you press "play" or "OK" on the remote it should play the movie, right? WRONG! If you press "OK", it doesn't work. what happens, a blue blank screen appears on the TV screen. You have to press "play" only, apparently. And that was only after a couple months. And now it's been 9 months and my DVD player/recorder - which by the way, cost me about $170 - is not working. No "main menu", NOTHING! Hell, my homie has a regular $45 DVD player that he's had longer than me (and not from GoVideo) and the darn thing is still working! As far as I'm concerned, this is the last product I'll ever buy from GoVideo!!!! I wish there was a less than 1 rating! Rating: - * Cheap product ... It is true that the unit is inexpensive but the quality of the recording is so poor you may miss your VHS tapes. Also scheduled recording is not working (better buy a tivo and transfer the recordings to your PC and then burn them to DVD form the PC) The remote is very poor, both in design and efficiency. Cluttered buttons and you really have to be very close to the main unit for the remote to work. Also the unit doesn't work with most of the DVD brands on the market, you may see what brands are compatible on their website. The bottomline is, D O N O T S P E N D M O N E Y O N T H I S U N I T... |
