* 9840 ...
I bought this machine at work for my job. Now that I have used it at work and print about 50 pages per day and liked it so well, I bought one for me. To use at home. I just got tired of printers that clog up and will not print if you don't use them for a month or so, Or the date on the ink runs out and you have to buy a new ink even if the ink is still full. Yes the company paid for the company printer. I paid for mine, and love it.

* Brother MFC-9840cdw review ...
So far, I am impressed with the Brother MFC-9840cdw; however, when copying some documents, the color copies were a different shade or hue than the originals. Also, when I asked a salesman here that sold the same Brother MFC about how often we'd have to replace the drum, he advised me that the drums were good for at least 30,000 pages. When I received the machine, I saw in the manual that replacing the drum is required every 17,000 pages. There are other parts that need replacing on frequent intervals, which makes maintenance on the Brother fairly expensive.
On the plus side, the wireless network function works great, and for the most part, the color copies are pretty decent. The speed is sufficient for my needs. I haven't had time to fiddle much with the software, so I can't comment on that. The envelopes do tend to curl a bit, even after making the adjustment recommended by support.
Overall, I'm pleased with it, but if I had to do it over again, I would look for a multi-function machine that didn't require the expensive maintenance.

* works good ...
this is my first purchase of a laser printer. I checked out others and was impressed with the speed and functions. Doing envelopes is not the greatest but post cards are good. We do wireless in our office as a few of us are using the printer. That was pretty easy to do.

* Great for the price ...
This little unit does it all; wireless networking, multiple paper trays, and duplex printing and scanning. This is a truly great buy. A couple of caveats:
1. The color image quality just isn't that great. It's good enough, but the colors don't compare to similar HP offerings. However, if you're more about functionality and less about pretty pictures, this shouldn't bother you too much.
2. The unit tends to lie about when it's time to replace the toner cartridge. This has caused a lot of rumblings online. There are a couple of workarounds, but the easiest thing to do is pull the cartridge out, and stick a piece of black electrical tape over the little round glass apertures on either side. Stick the cartridge back in and it will happily print perfectly fine well beyond the bogus toner "End of Life" message that the printer shows.

* Some drawbacks ...
Overall there is a lot of functionality in this machine. Also prints quickly (once it has warmed up which can take a bit). Print quality is acceptable for most purposes. The duplexing works well.
I bought this after using a big HP inkjet AIO for years. My main problem with the inkjet was I didn't print often enough and the print heads would clog up. However, the HP AIO overall was very easy to work with.
This AIO, not as easy. For instance, if I wanted to scan something on the HP, I could change settings from the printer console and send it to a standard network share. With the Brother, you have to configure it to email the file, FTP it, or send to a specific machine that has the Brother software installed on it and properly configured to exclude it from the firewall. Since I don't have an FTP server running, I have to use the Brother software route, and I really would prefer not to have this resource hog running all the time. Plus you can't control the settings from the printer itself! Even though it has 2 Start buttons - one for color, one for B&W - both do the same thing for scanning! Nor can you change the resolution. You can do this from your computer running the Brother software, but for me that means 1) going upstairs to put the document in the scanner 2) going downstairs to start the scan on the computer 3) going back upstairs to retrieve the document. The HP let me choose color/grayscale and resolution and duplex and everything right from the printer, the Brother is a pain.
But what I really can't believe on a fairly pricey AIO is there is no way to find out how much toner is left. No status, no nothing. I was in the middle of printing hundreds of pages for a mailing and the printer told me it was almost out of black. Less than 20 pages later it just stopped. Since I was going to have to drive a good ways to get to Staples to get a new toner cartridge, I tried to check to see how much color toner was left and I was stunned that I couldn't. Rather than spend the nearly $300 on color cartridges at Staples when I picked up the black cartridge, I hoped for the best and decided to order some online for cheaper. When I got home from Staples and continued the print job, about 30 pages later it was out of color toner and I had to make another trip out. Great, thanks Brother!
The configuration software and configuration via web-browser also leave a lot to be desired. Brother needs to spend some time looking at HP products to see how user-friendly devices work.
